As 2026 comes to an end, businesses in Rwanda should prepare their financial records before 31 December 2026. Waiting until March to fix missing records can create tax and compliance problems.
Although corporate income tax is filed by 31 March 2027, important year-end records must be complete before the financial year closes.
Year-End Closing Checklist
Before 31 December, businesses should check that:
- Income is properly supported: Every sale should have an EBM invoice and a related contract.
- Sales are reconciled: Accounting records should match sales reported through EBM and VAT returns.
- Expenses are supported: Keep EBM receipts, customs declarations, payment records, payroll declarations, and 15% withholding tax records.
- Non-EBM costs are declared: Bank charges, depreciation, and other adjustments should be properly reported to RRA.
- Accounts are audit-ready: Financial statements should be prepared by a certified accountant. An audit is required for businesses above RWF 600 million.
Why Year-End Preparation Matters
Missing or unsupported records can result in costs being disallowed and taxed at 28%. Preparing your accounts before 31 December can help reduce last-minute pressure and improve your tax compliance.
